The best showerhead filters are all over TikTok, and though we’re skeptical of most viral products, these particle-minimizing home gadgets take our everything showers to a cleaner, gentler level. They essentially filter out hard water contaminants like metals and minerals from your water, which can otherwise build up on your skin and hair and lead to dryness, dullness, and even an itchy scalp. “Hard water has higher levels of calcium and magnesium in it,” explains Omer Ibrahim, MD, a Chicago-based board-certified dermatologist. “While they are generally safe to drink, they can be hard on the skin and hair.”

    Our Top Showerhead Filters

    • Best Overall: Jolie Filtered Showerhead, $169
    • Best Aromatherapeutic: Canopy Filtered Shower Head, $150

If you’ve been dealing with bouts of dry skin or brittle hair and have tried nearly every moisture-intensive treatment available, your existing showerhead’s filtration system (or, most likely, lack thereof) might be the root of your problem—and we’re here to fix that. Below, take a look at some of the top-tier filtered showerheads available that improve water quality and, therefore, your hair and skin.

Why it's worth it: Jolie’s Filtered Showerhead is a TikTok star that’s well worth the hype, according to Dr. Ibrahim. “While this one is on the pricier side, it is a full filter system with an aesthetically pleasing showerhead,” he says. It utilizes KDF-55 (a type of copper-zinc alloy filter) and calcium sulfite to minimize levels of chlorine, heavy metals, and minerals in your shower water for up to 90 days. After that, you can just swap in a new filter.

Why it's worth it: Canopy makes one of our favorite humidifiers for dry skin, but the brand’s Filtered Shower Head is also a favorite amongst Allure editors and dermatologists like Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist based in New York City. She previously vouched for its intensive filtration system of granular activated carbon, a copper-zinc complex, and calcium sulfite to remove contaminants. This showerhead also features a built-in felt diffuser for adding a dab of your favorite essential oil, turning your shower into a spa-like, sensory experience.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How does hard water affect my skin and hair?

Considering hard water contributes to soap scum (as in, that gross layer of grime that can build up on your shower floor if you don’t clean it often enough), it’s no surprise that it can also lead to buildup on your body and hair, according to Dr. Ibrahim. “For people who have hard water in their shower, they’ll often see a layer of soap scum on their walls–that’s due to the minerals reacting to soap to form this insoluble layer,” he explains. When that layer of “scum” develops on your body, it can exacerbate dryness and inflammation, especially for those with skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, and even acne.

As for your hair, that layer of minerals leads to a dry, brittle texture and dull color (a major bummer if you pay for expensive color treatments). “Hard water can also exacerbate dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis,” adds Dr. Ibrahim.

How does a filtered showerhead benefit my skin and hair?

Washington, D.C.-based dermatologist Adam Friedman, MD, previously told Allure that these filters, also known as water softeners, cleanse your tap water of mineral buildup and replace them with sodium through a process called ion exchange. This process lowers the water’s concentration of mineral sediments, minimizing buildup and, potentially, irritation. To that end, “shower filters can help as long as they include a water-softening system,” says Dr. Ibrahim. These “water-softening systems” include filtration mediums such as KDF-55 (a combination of carbon and zinc) and calcium sulfite. In removing these minerals from your shower water, they can deliver calmer, healthier skin—not to mention shinier, softer hair. Consider them an investment in your long-term beauty routine.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We are particularly discerning when writing about skin-care devices. This is because of the increased risks and, in many cases, the high price points, that accompany at-home dermatological tools and devices.

Each device undergoes extensive testing and must be approved by a senior member of our beauty team prior to appearing in Allure. Additionally, our editorial team consults board-certified dermatologists and cosmetic chemists about the science behind product claims and independently reviews any studies cited by brands. Testers consider performance across four primary categories: efficacy, safety (including ease of use), research and the science behind specific claims, as well as product value. To learn more information on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Why it’s worth it: Sold as singles or trios, ColourPop’s Super Shock Shadows are the kind of sparkly staples you’ll keep reaching for again and again. The pigment is seriously next-level, the shade range is massive (38 and counting), and the blend is effortless. Even better? They cost less than $10 each, but you’d never guess it from the way they blend. The cream-to-powder formula melts onto lids, sets in place, and lasts all day without creasing. According to New York City-based makeup artist Amanda Gabbard, Colourpop shadows are “incredibly blendable and just feel luxurious.” Unlike some shimmery shades that look dull once applied, these deposit bold, almost-metallic color with just one swipe. For the most intense swipe, we like using our fingers or a flat, firm brush. For a sheer, soft wash of shimmer, opt for a fluffy brush.

The creamy mattes and shimmers both buff out seamlessly, softening the look of wrinkles rather than emphasizing them. Why it’s worth it: If you’re ready to play with color, New York City-based makeup artist Alexa Persico says Nyx Professional Makeup excels at creating thoughtful color stories with its Ultimate Shadow Palettes. "The warmer neutrals and jewel tones layer easily and allow for full glam or soft-focus looks,” she explains. Take I Know That’s Bright, for example: The mix of vibrant purples and sparkly reds is ideal for anyone who loves to experiment. Prefer something more low-key? Warm Neutrals delivers the same smooth blendability in an easy, everyday palette.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between drugstore eye shadows and more prestige brands?

“The main differences between drugstore and prestige eye shadows typically come down to pigment refinement, wear time, and packaging,” says Loiz. “However, brands like Juvia’s Place are proving that drugstore formulas can perform just as well as high end options.” In fact, many makeup artists often reach for drugstore shadows first. “Drugstore formulas today offer excellent payoff for everyday looks, especially in mattes and basic shimmer tones,” says Persico. She notes that they also tend to offer more accessible color ranges for beginners and impressive quality at an affordable price point—making experimentation feel low-risk. “Honestly, in many cases, the average person won't notice a huge difference in day-to-day wear, especially if you use a good eye primer and the right brushes,” Persico adds.

How do you pick the best drugstore eye shadow?

New York City-based makeup artist Jennifer Nam previously told Allure that powder eye shadows tend to work best for most people, thanks to their seamless blendability. With the right powder, you can build color gradually, without any harsh lines. That said, if you have oily lids, a cream eye shadow stick or liquid formula may be a better fit. Creams are also a smart choice for mature skin, as “they have a smoother texture and are less likely to settle into fine lines and wrinkles,” New York City–based makeup artist Lisa Aharon previously told Allure. She favors matte finishes in particular, noting that they create a softly diffused look that’s more forgiving on texture.

How we test and review products

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide, inclusive shade range with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is the packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?

For our review of the best eye shadows, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and makeup artists. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product's performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete review process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness, a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine, or you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from are folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

  • Millie Bobby Brown: “Being a Mother Expedited This Version of Me”

Millie Bobby Brown: “Being a Mother Expedited This Version of Me”

millie bobby brown with blonde hairGetty ImagesSave StorySave this storySave StorySave this story

Millie Bobby Brown isn’t Eleven anymore. After ten years of facing monsters, the actor has finally finished her run as the Stranger Things hero. “I know I’ll never play her again,” she says wistfully. But she isn’t really saying goodbye to the character: “[Eleven] has influenced me in huge ways. She is a force to be reckoned with, who gave me a lot of confidence to be a hero within my own life.”

That self-assurance motivated Brown to launch Florence by Mills in 2019. “Naturally, [that role] gives you the confidence to be like, ‘Yeah, I might not know everything about skin care and beauty, but I’m going to build a company at 15.’” Since the start of the Netflix show, Brown, now 21, has also starred in the Enola Holmes and Godzilla films. She got married (to Jake Bongiovi) last year and recently adopted a baby girl. She isn’t even Millie Bobby Brown anymore, if you want to get technical. Legally, she’s Millie Bonnie Bongiovi.

Despite the internet’s resistance to the idea, she’s grown up and firmly in her “most authentic era,” which she attributes to motherhood. “Being a mother expedited this version of me,” she says. “Nothing could get in the way of me being who I need to be for my daughter.”

“Nothing could get in the way of me being who I need to be for my daughter.”

With the addition to her family, self-care has become even more important in her routine. “I want her to see me take care of myself,” she says, but she doesn’t mean indulgences like lengthy facial massages. “You have to do everything ten times quicker, and you don’t really get to do your gua sha in the morning.” Instead, self-care takes the form of more frequent check-ins with herself and her loved ones.

She journals regularly and she’s careful not to be self-deprecating, conscious of the example she sets for her daughter. “I have to talk to myself kindly,” she says, explaining that it can be easy to “talk badly about yourself and your body” if you’re not being mindful. “After becoming a parent, I couldn't imagine talking about myself like that anymore, because she's going to watch me do that.”

Brown also says it can be a reflex to shrink yourself for others, admitting she’s done so before. “Women naturally kind of become smaller so that men feel bigger,” she says, before adding that she can’t see herself doing this anymore for the same reason—her daughter.

Brown recognizes, though, that motherhood isn’t for everyone, and that nurturing your inner child can also help you flourish as a human. “I want everyone to choose their own destiny and be on their own journey,” she says. “If it's not a child who expedites [this growth], think about your inner child. Think about the person that you used to be.”

The advent of a new year doesn’t always call for reinvention. It's also a time to refocus and embrace what makes each of us unique and feels most authentic. When it comes to your nail color, that might mean finally discovering the nude polish that perfectly complements your skin tone, or leaning into your inner goth with a high-shine, patent-leather black manicure. It could mean indulging your romantic side with a rich, full-bodied red, or your spicy side with a zingy, hot-rod orange.

In a world where things can feel topsy-turvy, the best source for inspiration is often found through self-discovery—and that can start with a coat of nail polish. With guidance from top nail artists, we put together a menu of colors to cater to every side of you.

    Fresh Nude

Are you surprised? This nail trend has many aliases—“soap,” “lip gloss,” “clean”—but whatever you call it, the look isn’t going anywhere, and will likely get another rebrand in 2026. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. “Nude nails will always be in style, especially after seasons of bright summer polishes and dark winter hues,” says Bana Jarjour, a Los Angeles-based nail artist.

This look gets its allure from being the wallflower of polishes. “Nudes don’t distract from the intricacy and details of clothes,” Jarjour explains, adding that the muted colors were all over the spring/summer 2026 runways. They were seen on models at Prabal Gurung, where Amy Ling Lin, founder of Sundays Studios, sent models down the runway in the sheer, rosy neutral No. 49; and at LoveShackFancy, where Miss Pop, a New York City-based nail artist, added a veil of Essie Liquid Sunrise over nude polishes for the show; and others too.

As for which polish to reach for, Jarjour recommends Essie Nail Polish in Skinny Dip if you have a fair or light-medium skin tone, and OPI Bare My Soul if you have a medium to deep one. If these polish options are not for you, we understand—picking your nude is very personal. Check out our list of the prettiest nude nail polishes for different skin tones.

Pinterest dubbed the color blue a trend to watch across beauty, fashion, and food in 2026. For nails, though, artists are torn over which shade will come out on top in the new year. Sojin Oh, nail artist and creative director at Kijibae, sees foggy blue on the horizon: “There is something meditative about gray-blue that reminds me of being in the Pacific Northwest,” she says. “It’s quiet, reflective, a bit calming, and while it’s moody, it’s not melancholic.” She adds, “With the year we had, this moody blue captures that feeling of both clarity and blurriness.”

She points to Kijibae’s Foggy Semi-Cured Gel Nail Strips, which are translucent, semi-cured gray-blue. We like Cirque Colors in Navy Jelly to achieve a similar effect with a polish. For a more opaque take, we recommend the OPI Nail Polish in Alpaca My Bags.

Jarjour and Sarah Chue, a Los Angeles-based nail artist, agree that a medium-wash denim blue will be popular, likening it to a go-to basic in your wardrobe. “This shade works like a neutral alternative for many outfits, but with more personality,” Chue says. “It has a refined, sophisticated edge, but is still wearable every day.”

She suggests Dior Nail Polish in Denim—a medium-dark jeans-colored crème formula—topped with a shiny topcoat. We also like the Lights Lacquer Nail Polish in Mr. Darcy, which is slightly grayer.

Extra-glossy black lacquer is going to dominate the feeds in 2026. “The return of quiet luxury and ’90s minimalism is inspiring darker, more refined tones that balance edge with elegance,” says Jin Soon Choi, a New York City-based nail artist and founder of nail-care brand JinSoon. She recommends its Nail Polish in Absolute Black.

If you’re looking for under-$20 options, we like the creamy Mooncat Nail Polish in Emo For Life and Essie Nail Polish in Licorice. Mazz Hanna, a Los Angeles-based nail artist and founder of Nailing Hollywood, a boutique nail artist talent agency, is a fan of Gelcare’s Patent Leather Black, a longer-lasting option (that requires you have an LED lamp to cure it). “It gives the exact kind of high-shine, mirror finish,” she says.

Maybe it's all the romantic book-to-film adaptations or all the seductive visuals that took over runways—either way, we’re expecting burgundy to burst through our screens in 2026. “As fashion leans toward classic tailoring and timeless beauty, deep reds match the mood—romantic, confident, and polished,” says Choi.

Burgundy is particularly versatile, she adds: “A glossy crème look invites depth, while a matte finish looks luxe and vintage.” She references her brand’s polish in Audacity. We also like the full-bodied OPI Infinite Shine Nail Polish in Malaga Wine.

The Noncommittal Bob Will Be 2026’s Biggest Haircut Trend

Side by side image of Selena Gomez and Lori HarveyGetty ImagesSave StorySave this storySave StorySave this story

Lori Harvey, Selena Gomez, and Hailey Bieber do not have magical powers (that we know of), but they do have the power to change the length of their hair with just a few flicks of a styling wand. All three women have what I like to call “The Better Bob.” It’s basically a lob (as in, long bob) that gives the illusion of a bob, depending on how you manipulate the ends. When you’re no longer feeling the bob, you can easily transition back to longer strands with just one swoop of a brush, making it the perfect noncommittal haircut.

Though it’s had a major resurgence, this cut isn’t totally new: In the ‘90s, Naomi Campbell, Julia Roberts, and Jennifer Anniston opted for collarbone-grazing, medium length hair over the short bobs and pixies of the time—often styling their length with bumped ends, tousled curls, or voluminous layers that straddled the line between bob and lob so, well, you couldn’t quite tell which it was.

A modern case in point: Selena Gomez’s Instagram feed. In one post, the singer’s hair is in a flowy lob that grazes her shoulder blades, but in a post just a day later, she has a voluminous bob that sits right at the nape of her neck. Part of me wanted to attribute this beautiful sorcery to extensions, but my beauty editor Spidey sense told me otherwise. There it was: The Better Bob.

    Selena Gomez lob haircutGetty Images

Lori Harvey, who lives on many people’s hair inspo Pinterest boards, has also been known to keep her length between a bob and a lob, often going back and forth between the two lengths in a day's time. Los Angeles-based hairstylist Ray Christopher has been styling Harvey for seven years and says her hair was to the middle of her back when they began working together. Harvey cut her hair into a neck-length bob at the start of 2022 and went even shorter (jaw-length) in October 2022.

Lori Harvey with a lob haircutGetty Images

According to Christopher, Harvey’s hair has almost returned to the middle of her back now, but while she was growing it out, she would often curl the ends of her lob to achieve a voluminous ‘90’s-inspired bob. But instead of pulling out the scissors, Christopher says he’d reach for a texturizing spray and a curling iron. “I love the Oribe Texturizing Spray and the Paul Mitchell Super Clean Light Hairspray,” Christopher tells Allure. The hairstylist used the texturizing spray to create volume before blowing the hair out and creating iron curls. A generous application of hairspray helps lock the curls in place.

New York City-based hairstylist Miriam Chisala uses the same method to create a faux bob on lob-length hair. Chisala echos that using a texturizing or volumizing spray is best but prefers to use a round brush over a curling iron because it creates more voluminous curls. Christopher also mentioned that he will sometimes tuck the strands up into the hair and use bobby pins to secure them, though Chisala says that “when the length is between the shoulder and the neck, you don’t necessarily need bobby pins.”

“If you get it curled enough, sometimes all you need is a little bit of spray,” says Chisala. Teasing the hair at the roots with a fine-tooth comb (especially further down by the nape of the neck) can create even more volume, according to Chisala, as it lifts up the hair to create the illusion of shorter length.

    Hailey Bieber haircutScreenshot instagram.com/haileybieber

For an even lower-effort transformation, look to Hailey Bieber, who was the talk of the Internet when she got a bob haircut back in 2023. Now, it seems the Rhode founder has grown out her crop, but not so much so that she can’t revisit the look at a moment’s notice. The new haircut, courtesy of hairstylist Justine Marjan, sits just above Bieber’s shoulders with the ends flipped out in different directions for a slightly tousled look. According to the experts, all Bieber has to do is tease her roots, create round brush curls, and douse her hair with hairspray, and she’ll be back to a bob in just minutes.

So, if you’re noncommittal when it comes to your hair’s length or you just want to look like the lead in an early 2000s rom-com, consider flexing between a lob and a bob as your signature hairstyle—it’s guaranteed to keep everyone on their toes.

12 Natural Bridal Hairstyles That Will Elevate Your Wedding Day Look

Lupita Nyong'o in a baby breath flower crownGetty ImagesSave StorySave this storySave StorySave this story

Growing up, whenever I envisioned my wedding day, I always pictured myself with long, flowy hair—the opposite of my kinky 4C coils. Wearing my natural hair in mini twists for my recent engagement, however, completely changed my vision. Not only did I feel confident in my natural texture, but I also felt completely myself—a feeling, I’ve found, is imperative to enjoying milestone moments. “Wearing natural hair [on your wedding day] can boost confidence and empower Black brides to feel proud of their cultural heritage and individuality,” says Keziah Jones, founder of Black-owned bridal makeup and hair company, Beyond The Knot Co. “Embracing natural hair on such a significant occasion can be a powerful statement of self-love and acceptance.”

The misconception that wedding hairstyles for Black women have to be long and straight is out. Now, brides-to-be can look to a vast list of textured hairstyle options that are beautiful and elegant enough for even the most momentous occasions. If you’re unsure how to start ideating your wedding hairstyle, Jones says to consider your hair texture first. “Black hair comes in various textures: curly, coily, or kinky. So choose a hairstyle that complements your natural texture and makes you feel comfortable and confident,” says Jones. For example, kinky type 4 coils may not lend well to a messy bun style like wavy type 3 curls would.

Also, think about the weather—depending on the season and location of your wedding, the climate may affect your hairstyle. “Humidity, wind, or rain can impact certain styles, so choose one that will hold up throughout the day,” says Jones. Lastly, the wedding outfit ultimately determines the hairstyle. “Your chosen hairstyle should complement the overall theme of your wedding and work well with your dress,” says Jones. “Doesn’t matter if it’s an updo, braids, twists, or a natural afro, make sure it harmonizes with your overall bridal look.”

Whether you want to let your Afro do its thing or are looking for a more structured style, the possibilities are just about endless. Below, discover bridal hairstyles that let your natural hair shine in all its glory.

    Classic Twist Out

You can’t go wrong with letting your curls out for your wedding day. Wearing your hair in its natural state practically guarantees you’ll exude confidence. If your hair is prone to shrinkage, try putting it in twists a few days before the wedding and unraveling them the morning of. If you opt for a twist out, braid out, or flexi/perm rod set to define your fro, New New York City-based hairstylist Monae Everett suggests reaching for the Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam, as it “provides a strong hold and does not flake.”

    Baby’s Breath Crown

A short Afro adorned with a baby’s breath crown makes for an ethereal bridal hairstyle. The beauty of this look is its simplicity; it comes together quickly and easily. You can make a baby’s breath crown on your own, but if you don’t have a DIY spirit, Etsy has many whimsical options.

If your hair is too fine or short to secure accessories directly, Jones says wearing a headband as a base is the best solution. “You can attach flowers or other accessories to the headband for a stylish and secure fit,” says Jones. Opting for smaller headpieces will also help the style last all night. “Lightweight flower crowns or accessories won't weigh down your short hair and are easier to secure, making it less likely to slip or move around,” says Jones.

For edgy brides, a sharp style like Jodie Turner Smith’s platinum buzz cut with finger waves is a great way to go. This look requires minimal styling—perfect for a no-fuss bride—but the result is still stunning. “Smoothing your curls with pomades, mousses, and gels will help keep [the waves] in place as you style," Everett previously told Allure. Ever since Taraji P. Henson showed up to the 2024 Met Gala in this pink floral bun, I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. This hairstyle wowed on the carpet, so you can imagine how stunning it would be coming down the aisle. Choose floral hair accessories that match the color palette of your wedding to tie everything together. Beyond The Knot Co. hairstylist Jenever Volf recommends using bobby pins to securely fasten the flower hair accessories to the bun. “Crisscross the pins for extra hold to ensure that the accessory stays in place throughout the day,” says Volf.

    Perfectly Messy Bun

This effortless curly bun would look gorgeous just about anywhere, but especially on your wedding day. The wispy tendrils falling out of the updo give it an undone vibe that would work well for a bohemian theme or add a relaxed element to a sleek or modern aesthetic.

When creating this style, Volf suggests starting with a strong ponytail base. “Make sure the ponytail is tight and secure to maintain the sleek look,” says Volf. Then, reach for a wand curler (we love the Pattern Beauty Interchangeable Curling Iron), using a ¾ inch barrel to create medium-sized curls before fashioning your bun. Then use a ⅜ inch barrel to create small curls that cascade down.

To get this style to last through all the festivities, you’ll need a lot of bobby pins and a generous spritz of hairspray. “A light-hold hairspray will set the style in place and ensure long-lasting hold throughout the day,” says Volf. We love the Bumble and bumble Does It All Light Hold Hairspray, which has oat and corn starch in the formula to help keep the hair from reacting to moisture while you dance the night away.

    Curly Ponytail

    Gabrielle Union Curly PonytailGetty Images

Gabrielle Union has been inspiring the girls with beautiful natural hairstyles for years, and this voluminous ponytail is one of my favorites, especially for brides. The slicked-back style allows your face to be front and center while the cascade of curls from the high ponytail add just the right amount of drama.

The For Kurls Drawstring Ponytail from Heatfree Hair is an easy way to achieve this look—just slick your natural hair into a high bun and attach the ponytail. For a sleek ponytail base, “brush your hair up using a boar bristle brush or a fine-tooth comb to ensure that your hair is smooth and free of any bumps or flyaways as you brush it up,” says Volf. Fluff out the ponytail extension for more volume and you’re ready to say “I do.”

This elevated twist on a braided ponytail was practically made for brides. To create this look Everett suggests first combing the hair back into a sleek ponytail and securing with a hair tie. “I'd add the Biolage Gelée Styler along the hairline to brush the ponytail in place,” says Everett. Then, she says to elongate the hair by braiding extensions into the natural hair. Add an elegant oversized bow at the base of your ponytail braid for a preppy finishing touch.

Take a page from Issa Rae's style book with this sleek afrocentric hairstyle. The flat twists going back diagonally, with the slicked back base, and the full afro in the back make this look ultra-detailed—there's a lot going on but it all works so well. And who wouldn't want to be this extra on their wedding day? Use a heavy-duty styling gel like the Got2B Ultra Glued Invincible Styling Hair Gel to slick your hair back half way.

If you don't have enough volume (or time) to create Rae's poufy afro, worry not—a kinky drawstring wig like the Kinky 3-In-1 Half Wig from Her Given Hair will suffice. Simply slick your hair back into a ponytail and attach the drawstring wig at the base, pulling the string as far as you need to and securing the clips to your hair to create a natural looking afro.

Like so many of us who answer the gnawing inner voice that asks “Should I get bangs?” with a resounding yes, Kourtney Kardashian was bound to eventually tire of her fringe. She's been wearing blunt, piecey bangs for a couple of months now, but with the help of hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, she's apparently growing them out in the most iconic fashion.

Giannetos posted a carousel of photos to his Instagram grid, revealing a whole new look for the Lemme founder. After weeks of stick-straight length and brow-skimming bangs, her hair has been totally reshaped into a retro, bouncy blowout.

“New ‘the YSL-haircut,’” Giannetos wrote in the caption. “It’s Farrah Fawcett it’s Fashion it’s Feathery it’s Fluffy and it’s 70s!" He adds that her glossy, darkest-brown, loose curls and newly swoopy curtain bangs have been given a boost by Great Lengths hair extensions.

    Instagram content

Emphasizing the seventies-ness of it all are her oversized Saint Laurent aviator sunglasses. We can't tell what she's wearing beneath her coat, but it wouldn't be the least bit surprising if it included dramatically flared jeans.

When Kardashian shared Giannetos's post to her Instagram story, she also tagged makeup artist Jennifer Luney Tioseco, who gave the reality TV star bronzed cheeks and shimmering nude lips—a low-key look that pairs well with her subtle off-white manicure.

Even if you don't have access to Giannetos and ample extensions, Kardashian's new style can definitely serve as guidance for when you decide to grow our your bangs. She proves a flippy, middle-parted curtain bang never fails.

If treating flakes has always left you, er, scratching your head, you’re not alone—and finding the best dandruff treatments starts with understanding what’s actually causing them. “Dandruff is a very common concern. While the term gets used as a catch-all, it can stem from several different issues, including seborrheic dermatitis, product buildup, contact dermatitis, and psoriasis,” says Julie De La Cruz, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Miami.

What dermatologists typically mean when they say dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis. “This is where an overgrowth of normal flora yeast leads to inflammation, itching, and flaking,” Dr. De La Cruz explains. True dandruff has a distinct look, which helps explain why it doesn’t always respond to basic moisturizing alone. It typically appears as larger white to yellowish flakes that have a slightly oily quality and tend to cling to the scalp and hair rather than dusting off easily. Redness and itchiness are common underneath, and it’s most often seen on oilier scalps, especially around the crown, hairline, or behind the ears. (By contrast, small, white, powdery flakes paired with a tight—but not inflamed—scalp usually point to dryness, while thicker, silvery scales with sharper edges may signal scalp psoriasis.)

That’s why managing dandruff often takes more than just a shampoo (though it’s still a great place to start). Supportive conditioners, leave-ins, and barrier-repair formulas can help calm irritation, rebalance the scalp, and keep flakes from making a comeback between washes. Ahead, the best dandruff treatments derms recommend when flakes show up uninvited.

Why it's worth it: When it comes to treating dandruff, dermatologists often turn to ketoconazole, “which is an antifungal that inhibits an enzyme key to yeast growth,” as a first line of defense, says Dr. De La Cruz. “Usually I start with a ketoconazole-based shampoo like Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo with 1% ketoconazole, given that studies show ketoconazole to be slightly better tolerated than other ingredients,” says Dr. De La Cruz. Ketoconazole works by controlling Malassezia yeast that fuels dandruff, helping calm flaking, itching, and irritation at the source instead of simply rinsing flakes away. If an over-the-counter formula doesn’t do the trick, Dr. De La Cruz notes she’ll prescribe a 2% ketoconazole shampoo for severe dandruff. Bonus: Nizoral has a fresh, clean scent that makes it feel more pleasant to use regularly.

Why it's worth it: If your dandruff comes with thicker, oilier scales, selenium sulfide is often the next move. “Selenium sulfide works very well and feels comfortable, is not overly drying, and works quickly,” says Dr. De La Cruz. Like ketoconazole, it targets the fungus behind flakes, but via a different angle: “Unlike ketoconazole that blocks the enzyme for yeast production, selenium sulfide prevents the division of fungal cells,” she explains. Vichy Dercos is formulated with 0.6% micronized selenium sulfide, allowing the active to distribute more evenly across the scalp and fight flakes at the source. Supporting ingredients like niacinamide, glycerin, salicylic acid, and menthol help calm itch, loosen buildup, and leave the scalp feeling refreshed. “Oftentimes I have patients alternate between this and a ketoconazole shampoo to get the best results,” she says.

Why it's worth it: Most dandruff treatments focus on flakes alone, but CeraVe Hydrating Anti-Dandruff Conditioner takes care of the scalp, too (no surprise if you already know the brand for its gentle, barrier-supporting skincare). This formula relies on 0.5% pyrithione zinc, a milder antifungal that helps keep dandruff-causing yeast in check while being gentle enough for regular use, paired with ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid to reinforce the scalp barrier, soothe irritation, and keep hair feeling soft and easy to detangle. “The ceramides offer a very comfortable conditioning experience to help detangle the hair, while the zinc pyrithione further helps to treat dandruff,” says Dr. De La Cruz. It’s a nourishing pick when you want ongoing flake control without the dryness that can come with stronger antifungals like ketoconazole or selenium sulfide, which are often better suited for short-term treatment.

The lightweight, no-rinse spray features a targeted nozzle that breaks down buildup and dead skin without disturbing your style, while menthol delivers a subtle, instantly soothing cooling effect. Ingredients like Lactobacillus ferment, ceramides, and honey help calm and comfort the scalp, making it an easy daily refresh for protective styles and extensions.

“I inherited my flaky scalp from my father. Just like him, I used medicated dandruff shampoos for most of my life. Then I tried the Cécred Detoxifying Shampoo. The silky later doesn't dry out my hair like pyrithione zinc. It smells faintly of peppermint oil and cools my scalp with menthol (and it has a purplish blue color, whish is just cool). But what keeps me going back is that it keeps itchy patches away for two solid weeks. For an even better boost, I spritz my scalp with the Cécred Scalp Refreshing Spray before hopping in the shower. The spray was formulated to stop the itch when wearing protective styles like braids, but I find it a great pre-shampoo treatment to dislodge any debris or flakes before I wash. Why it's worth it: Most people assume flakes automatically mean a dry scalp, but classic dandruff is usually tied to excess oil, not a lack of it. The yeast that drives dandruff (Malassezia) feeds on sebum, so when oil builds up, flaking and itch often follow. Neutrogena T/Sal Therapeutic Dandruff Shampoo uses 3% salicylic acid “to break down thick, greasy scales and loosen stubborn buildup,” making it especially helpful for dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and even psoriasis-related flakes, says Dr. De La Cruz. Unlike antifungal shampoos that target yeast directly, T/Sal focuses on clearing the excess skin and oil that keep flakes coming back. The fragrance-free formula cleanses thoroughly, giving even sensitive scalps a chance to reset while minimizing skin irritation.

Why it's worth it: If your flakes are small, white, and powdery, it’s easy to jump straight to “dandruff,” but that combo usually means dry scalp, especially if things feel tight rather than itchy or inflamed. Dove Derma Dryness and Itch Relief Anti-Dandruff Shampoo focuses on what dry, itchy scalps need: gentle, moisturizing cleansing that helps soften and reduce the shedding of dry skin. It uses 1% pyrithione zinc to help calm dryness-related itch and keep your scalp feeling comfortable. Why it's worth it: Dandruff lives its best life in an environment of buildup and excess oil, which is why targeted exfoliation can make such a difference. Nioxin’s Scalp Purifying Exfoliator is designed to clear away what keeps flakes coming back, giving the scalp a deeper reset than shampoo alone. “This product is a creamy exfoliant that helps lift buildup and excess oil off the scalp without irritation,” says Fatima Fahs, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Southfield, Michigan. Used on dry hair before shampooing, the rinse-out treatment relies on lactic, tartaric, and benzoic acids to loosen dead skin, unclog follicles, and rebalance the scalp—key steps for managing dandruff and flakiness. To prevent over-drying, the formula is buffered with shea butter for moisture, while peppermint oil delivers a cooling, calming effect.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is dandruff the same as dry scalp?

“When people see white scales and flakes on their scalp, they think it’s dandruff, but it’s actually dry skin,” says Dr. De La Cruz. True dandruff usually appears as larger white-to-yellow flakes with a slightly oily texture that stick to the scalp and hair rather than falling away like fine powder.

Can you get rid of dandruff?

You can’t get rid of dandruff for good, but you can usually manage it very well, depending on what’s causing it. “Whether dandruff can be ‘cured’ or just managed will depend on the type and cause of dandruff that the person has,” says Dr. De La Cruz. For common skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis, the goal is to maintain control and minimize flares. On the other hand, she notes that dandruff caused by product buildup or contact dermatitis can often be resolved completely by removing the trigger. In other words, some flakes are a short-term fix, while others require a longer-term game plan.

What ingredients should I look for in an anti-dandruff shampoo?

When shopping for anti-dandruff hair care products, it helps to look for ingredients that target the root cause of flakes, not just the symptoms. “Active ingredients to look for in anti-dandruff shampoo include yeast-focused ingredients like zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, or ketoconazole,” says Dr. De La Cruz, since these help control the yeast linked to dandruff. She also notes the value of exfoliating ingredients—“like salicylic acid or glycolic acid”—which help loosen buildup and lift flakes so they can rinse away more easily. The right formula depends on whether yeast, buildup, or both are driving your dandruff.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best dandruff treatments, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team of in-house writers and editors, as well as contributors, along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more about our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.
